great points and I couldn’t agree more. I think Komen needs to create its own version of PP that has nothing to do with abortions and everything to do with saving women from bc.

Hi Ann,
Thank you for all of your thoughts. I run a non profit and have been faced with some difficult decisions in the past that have postponed growth. I have also made decisions that have led to growth only to find out that I was trusting the wrong people. My confusion about this echoes yours but I am agraid that I have to weigh all the sides and will do as Ellen says. Place my funds for the less fortunate women who need the mamograms. It falls for me there, where is the greatest need? Prevention and research for cure need to be hand in hand, equally important. When all is said and done as a non profit or any business, its your integrity at the end of the day that matters most. Thanks again for your thoughtful post.

Years ago when I was 22, I started a new job and had to wait 6 months for medical insurance. I couldn’t afford to have private health insurance. I went to Planned Parenthood for my yearly checkup because it was only $10. The doctor I saw gave me an extremely rigorous breast exam and spent 10 minutes showing me how to do it myself. From then on, I did a self-exam monthly. Right before I turned 39, I felt something in my breast that didn’t feel right. Turns out I had breast cancer.

I attribute finding my cancer early because PP taught me how important it is to know your body.

Breast cancer doesn’t care whether you are republican or a democrat. BC will attack you no matter what your party affiliation is.

I’m very disappointed in Komen. PP does so much more than perform abortions.

Sorry, but to discontinue funding for an education and outreach program that helped save lives seems to be counter to Komen’s “mission.” Women from poor and minority communities diagnosed with breast cancer are generally diagnosed at a later/less curable stage of the disease. The type of outreach Planned Parenthood was doing in cities/communities around the country was an effort to mitigate this.

Komen has forever linked its “brand” to partisan politics when it’s mission should be saving lives. The poor women who will no longer have access to educate about their health care will be the ones to pay the price.

As a breast cancer survivor I will make sure my donations will go elsewhere, to groups that don’t pander to political whim.
